Wiki Activity Reflection

There are many ways that I am thinking of using wikis in my elementary classroom. Peer-to-peer editing would definitely be one of the first uses, but also having groups of two to three students actually create writing pieces together would be great. The flexibility the wiki provides would lend itself to each student being able to contribute their part at different times, especially since students work at different paces. The ability to save and refer to previously saved drafts would also be very helpful during the drafting and revising stages of the process. Being able to give instant feedback on their pages is also a nice feature.

Another very helpful use would be to create electronic notebooks. I usually have my students keep spiral notebooks for most of their subjects, but these quickly become torn, dirtied, or lost. I encourage my students to keep their previous year notebooks and refer to them as needed, during the following school year. Creating a wiki of the most important concepts would be a great help as they could add and delete items throughout their school careers.

One way I am really looking forward to using the wiki is with my colleagues. I currently team teach and a wiki will be very helpful in coordinating with my partner teacher the material and concepts covered or in need of reteaching without the need of exchanging material from one end of the hall to the other. We can both log into the wiki and gather links to activities and videos we know need to be covered with both our classes.
